The Joy of PREGNANCY sessions

I had the honor of capturing their pregnancy announcement, Valentine's-themed, filled with pinks and love, fitting for the baby girl they were expecting. Mercedes’ mom was there too, glowing with excitement about becoming a grandmother. We even shot inside the room that would one day become Sophie’s nursery. At the time, none of us knew how important those photographs would become.

Their pregnancy journey was filled with little joys, planning Sophie’s crib, family members knitting her coming-home outfit, and the sweetness of imagining her future. I watched as they embraced every moment with gratitude, savoring the life they had long hoped for.

The Unexpected Turn - Sophie is 5 days old

Then came the call that changed everything. At 23 weeks, my phone lit up with a message from Mercedes. She was rushed to the hospital. Sophie had decided to come far too soon, and the doctors weren’t sure if she would make it through the night. Mercedes asked me to come to the NICU as quickly as I could.

I donned the required PPE and entered the room, knowing I had only minutes to preserve what might be their first and possibly only photographs with their daughter. The nurses allowed me to keep the lights on for just ten minutes. In that time, I saw her fragile body lying in the incubator, wires wrapped around her tiny frame, the rhythmic beeping of machines filling the air. The nurses watched closely as I worked, while Mercedes and Nicole leaned in with aching love.

The heaviness of the room pressed on me. Sadness and hope were interwoven in every glance, every breath. With each click of the shutter, I felt the weight of what these images could mean, not just photographs, but proof of her existence, her fight, and the unbreakable love of her parents

Documenting Sophie's early fight - Sophie is 1 month old

On April 18, Sophie Bella made her entrance into the world at just 23.4 weeks, weighing only 15.5 ounces. She was considered an “extreme preemie.” Her tiny frame faced monumental challenges from the very start. But even in her fragility, there was resilience, a spirit that defied the odds.

Through my lens, I captured her impossibly small fingers, the tubes and wires keeping her alive, and the overwhelming love of her mothers leaning over her incubator. Those first images carried the weight of faith, fear, and unconditional love.

As the weeks went on, Mercedes began decorating Sophie’s incubator with little themes each time I came to visit. Tiny blankets, accessories, and thoughtful details transformed her corner of the NICU into a reflection of the joy and hope they carried for their daughter. Photographing these moments made each session more than documentation; it was a way of capturing how love and creativity softened even the hardest days.

Milestones in the NICU- Sophie is 2 months old

Over the weeks that followed, I had the privilege of returning to document the milestones that became lifelines in Sophie’s story:

• The first hold – After seven long days, Mercedes and Nicole finally cradled their daughter. That one hour and fifteen minutes was described as the best of their lives.
• The first kiss – A moment so small and so monumental all at once. The tenderness of that kiss spoke volumes about love and longing.
• Kangaroo care – Holding Sophie skin-to-skin was both magical and terrifying. Hearts pounded as they felt her tiny chest rise and fall against theirs.
• Mother’s Day – Their very first as mothers, reflecting on how they had been mothered while now mothering Sophie. At 27 weeks of gestation, Sophie was just over three weeks old and growing stronger.
• Three-hour snuggles – A huge milestone came when Mercedes was able to hold Sophie for over three hours, describing every second as a gift.
• Diamond hands – To show just how small she was, Mercedes placed a ring next to Sophie’s hand. At only 1 lb 12 oz, her nails were “smaller than a diamond,” yet her spirit was stronger than one too.

These milestones were more than medical progress; they were sacred moments that stitched hope into days often filled with fear.

a story of RESILIENCE and love - Sophie is 3 months old

Through my lens, I witnessed the rollercoaster of NICU life, the soaring highs of breakthroughs, and the crushing lows of setbacks. Some days were filled with songs, kisses, and celebration; others were heavy with uncertainty, tears, and whispered prayers.

But what stood out above all else was love. Love that filled every sterile corner of the NICU. Love that refused to let go, even in the darkest hours. Mercedes and Nicole showed me, and everyone around them, that parenthood isn’t measured by certainty or ease; it’s measured by resilience, devotion, and showing up day after day for your child.

a new kind of freedom - Sophie is 4 months old

By the time Sophie Bella reached four months old, her progress was nothing short of miraculous. What once felt like endless days of wires, IVs, and machines slowly gave way to more freedom and independence. She began breathing on her own, and many of the tubes that had been a constant presence were no longer needed. For the first time, Mercedes and Nicole were able to hold her without the maze of cords in between. They could bathe her, dress her, and wrap her in the same kind of love every parent longs to give.

These moments so simple to many, were monumental victories in Sophie’s journey. Every smile, every cuddle, every bath became a celebration of how far she had come. Watching her parents soak up those everyday joys was a privilege, and my camera became a witness to a story of resilience finally breaking into light.

Home at last - Sophie is 5 months old

After months in the NICU, the day finally came when Mercedes and Nicole could bring Sophie home. Leaving the hospital meant stepping into a new chapter, one filled with hope, gratitude, and the normalcy they had dreamed of since the very beginning. I created a special “coming-home” album to honor this moment: a collection that captured the first time Sophie was cradled in her own nursery, wrapped in the love of her family without monitors or hospital walls in the way.

That day wasn’t just about closing the NICU chapter, it was about beginning the rest of her life. A life filled with the same creativity, joy, and fierce love that carried her through her earliest fight.

Her most recent session was a celebration of just how far she has come. We met outside at a park, with Sophie dressed in her mother Nicole’s baby clothes. They were still a little big on her, but she almost fit, a tender reminder of growth and connection across generations.

Behind her sat the kangaroo from the hospital, a symbol of the months of kangaroo care that kept her close to her mother’s heart. Every detail in the background had been carefully placed by Mercedes, Nicole, and Mercedes’ mother, each piece chosen with meaning, weaving together Sophie’s story in ways only her family could.

Through my lens, I captured not just a baby in a park, but a legacy of love, resilience, and hope that has carried her from the NICU to this moment in the sunshine.

As a photographer, I am often reminded that photographs become our anchors in times of uncertainty. For Sophie Bella’s story, each image became more than a picture; it was proof of her fight, her mother’s devotion, and the community that surrounded them.
