Let’s Create Your Perfect Proposal

Whether you’re dreaming of something extravagant or something beautifully simple, I’d love to help prepare your perfect proposal.

Sometimes the sweetest moments happen in the most unexpected places, a quiet stroll through downtown Wilmington, the peaceful shores of Fort Fisher, or even a wide-open field at golden hour. Other times, it’s all about weaving your love story into the setting: maybe with your favorite vehicle, your beloved pet, or surrounded by family.

Your proposal doesn’t have to be fancy to be unforgettable. It could be at your go-to coffee shop, your favorite bar, or even a fun and lighthearted surprise at your favorite fast food restaurant! And if your vision leans more toward the grand and romantic, imagine a floral-filled setup at Airlie Gardens or a private boat ride in a secluded location.

No matter what your style is, my goal is to make the process easy, personal, and stress-free while capturing every moment. Below you’ll find inspiration images to spark ideas. Service requests may vary depending on location and setup, but if you can dream it, we can see if we can make it happen.

To spark your imagination, I’ve included some inspiration images below (sourced from other photographers on Pinterest) to give you a sense of what’s possible. These aren’t my photos, but they’re here to help you visualize ideas and start dreaming about the style of proposal that feels most like you.

What to wear

What to Wear for the Perfect Proposal

One of the most common questions I get is: “How do I make sure she’s dressed up without giving away the surprise?”The key is to plan an outing that feels natural but still gives her a reason to dress a little nicer than usual, like a dinner date, a boat ride, or even a family get-together. That way, she feels amazing in the photos, and you still keep the proposal a total surprise.

For Her

If you’re wondering where to find a dress she’ll love, here are some great options:

  • Lulus – Affordable, trendy, and romantic dresses perfect for special occasions.
  • Abercrombie – Chic and elevated styles that look amazing in photos.
  • Revolve – A wide variety of dresses, from simple and classic to bold and statement-making.
  • Nordstrom – A go-to for quality dresses in all styles, with great customer service.
  • Lure  (Wilmington, NC) – A local boutique offering curated, stylish pieces that feel one-of-a-kind.
  • Anthropologie – Unique and elegant dresses that photograph beautifully.

When in doubt, go with a solid color that complements the location, like soft pastels for the beach, bold jewel tones in the fall, or classic neutrals that never go out of style. Avoid busy patterns, since they can distract from the moment in photos.

For Him

Your outfit matters too! The goal is to complement her look without being too matchy. A few ideas:

  • Classic & Polished: A button-down shirt with chinos or dark jeans, and a blazer if you want to elevate it.
  • Casual & Clean: A fitted polo or sweater with tailored jeans or pants—perfect for beach or outdoor settings.
  • Dressed-Up: If you know she’ll be in something more formal, opt for a sport coat or suit (no tie required unless that’s your style).

Stick with neutral or muted tones (white, navy, grey, tan, or soft earth tones) since they always photograph well. Avoid busy logos or graphics. And don’t forget shoes—a clean pair of loafers, boots, or dress sneakers can make all the difference.

Helpful tip: If you’re unsure how to coordinate, think of what you’d wear for engagement photos. Aim for outfits that feel timeless, comfortable, and a little elevated, something you’ll both love looking back on in the years to come.

A Real Wilmington Proposal Story: Cole & Jen

When Cole reached out to me from Texas, he had one big goal in mind: to give his girlfriend, Jen, the proposal she had always dreamed of. Jen had once mentioned that her ideal proposal would be near trees and on the water. Cole, being unfamiliar with Wilmington, was fortunate to discover Wilmington Water Tours; they offered a boat tour that could accommodate the whole family, as well as a great excuse to get everyone dressed up and out on the town. He wanted every detail to be perfect.

The challenge? He also wanted a photographer to capture the moment, her family present to celebrate afterward, and Jen to be dressed up without suspecting a thing. Since her family lives out west, it took careful planning for them to make the trip to Wilmington. Cole was determined, and with the help of Wilmington Water Tours, we made it happen.

He booked a private boat, and we set a plan to cruise past Eagle Island, where the trees framed the water beautifully in the background. I posed as a casual intern on the boat, my camera hidden away in a backpack so that Jen wouldn’t catch on. When their special song started playing, Cole knew it was his moment. He dropped to one knee, and Jen, completely surprised, said yes!

The best part? Her ring matched her dress perfectly, as if it had all been planned. After the proposal, we captured gorgeous couple portraits and celebrated with family photos, making the day even more meaningful.

It was romantic, thoughtful, and everything Jen had envisioned, brought to life by Cole’s planning and a little behind-the-scenes coordination.

Cole & Jen's Love story

"We were both out at a bar in Dallas. Her best friend, Hanna, was in town visiting her. She said she was going to find her a man, and Jen said not to, but she set out for it anyway and found success on her first attempt. I was getting a drink, and Hanna started talking to me. After a minute or two of talking, she said, “I'm married, but I think you would really like my friend.” My group was leaving, and some old guy was hitting on Jen, and she was facing away, so I couldn't actually see what she looked like, so I said, “Well, I have to go, but you can give her my number,” and wrote it on a receipt. She took the receipt, then asked for my Instagram as I was walking away. Then she DM'd me Jens' profile. I checked her out after she accepted my follow request and was surprised that her friend was actually really attractive. Then she texted me the following day, “Is this Cole? Got your number off the receipt at Lucky Dog”. Then we set up a date, and the rest is history! Now we have that receipt framed in our kitchen over a picture of us."
